Blog - Play Therapy

Play therapy is one of the most important methods of therapy that we use when working with children. It is through play therapy that we can target such a wide range of areas at one time. Through play therapy, Occupational Therapists are able to assess and provide intervention for gross motor skills, fine motor skills, social skills, communication skills as well as developing imagination and storytelling skills.

Our wonderful Occupational Therapist Derek, has written a blog on the importance of play therapy! You can read all about it here

Q&A with KTC Occupational Therapist, Derek Griggs

How long have you been an OT for?
I have been an Occupational Therapist for under a year.

What do you love most about occupational therapy?
What I love the most about being an Occupational Therapist is that every day is different, no two clients are the same. I love being able to celebrate the small victories with clients and their families and assisting to improve the lives of not only the clients, but their families as well.

What are you looking forward to most at KTC this year?
I'm most looking forward to a year of success and growth with KTC, especially in the group therapy programs and school holiday camps.

What is your favourite thing about KTC?
My favourite thing about KTC is the team that I work with. I love coming to work and being able to laugh and joke around with everyone and have a great time! It makes coming to work so much more enjoyable and is a really positive and supportive environment to work in.

What is your favourite therapy activity that parents can do at home with their kids?
My favourite therapy activity that parents can do at home with their kids is using spray bottles to water the plants. This activity is a great one for at home because it helps build the strength and endurance of those valuable hand muscles which are needed for fine motor skills such as handwriting and being able to use buttons and zippers and can be used as a part of daily routines to help introduce therapy (and even chores) into morning or night time schedules.
